Oxbow Books was founded in 1983 by David Brown, quickly growing to become one of the leading academic and scholarly book publishers, distributors and booksellers. In the early 1990s, the company expanded to North America, setting up the David Brown Book Company. In 2011, Oxbow Books and the David Brown Book Company were acquired by the Casemate Group, and in January 2014, the David Brown Book Company was rebranded Casemate Academic to better reflect its role within the Group.
